The Bespoke Process

Our Ethos

Why choose bespoke?

Genuinely yours

Every bespoke piece we create is entirely unique – designed around you, your story, and your budget. No two pieces leave our workshop the same.

Ethical by default

We use only ethically sourced gemstones and recycled or Fairtrade metals – including lab grown diamonds, lab grown coloured gemstones, coloured diamonds, and ethically sourced mined diamonds. You choose what matters to you.

Better value than the high street

Because we design and make everything in-house at our UK workshop, a bespoke piece from us typically costs no more – and often less – than a comparable off-the-shelf ring. Bespoke pieces start from around £1,000.

Consultation at Noah James Jewellery

Your Consultation

It doesn't matter whether you arrive with a fully formed vision or just a vague feeling – we're used to both. Your first conversation with us is free, relaxed, and completely without obligation.

We can meet in person at our Manchester showroom, or connect by phone or video call if you'd prefer. We'll talk through your ideas, show you examples of our work, explore stone options – including mined diamonds, lab grown diamonds, and coloured gemstones – and give you an honest picture of what's possible within your budget.

If you have any specific stone preferences in mind – shape, size, or type – it's worth jotting those down beforehand so we can have a selection ready for you to see.

CAD design and 3D prototype

Design & Prototyping

Once you're happy with the direction, we ask for a Design Deposit of £300 – fully redeemable against the final price of your piece. This is when the real creativity begins.

Your designer will develop the concept using a combination of hand sketching and CAD software, producing detailed photorealistic 3D renders for you to review and refine. We keep going until the design is exactly right – this is a collaboration, not a one-way process.

Once the design is approved, we 3D-print a wax or resin prototype so you can try it on, check the proportions, and feel the weight before a single gram of precious metal is committed. It's one of the most important steps we take, and one most jewellers skip.

Craftsmanship

With the prototype approved and your stones selected, we begin casting. We use the lost-wax method – the prototype is used to create a precise mould, ensuring the finished piece is a faithful replica in your chosen metal. We cast in recycled platinum, recycled gold, or Fairtrade gold.

Our jewellers hand-polish and assemble the casting before passing it to our stone setter, who places each stone individually by hand under microscope. It's painstaking, exacting work – and it's what separates a truly well-made ring from one that merely looks the part.

After setting, the piece receives a final polish, a steam clean, and a thorough quality check before being sent to the Assay Office to receive its official hallmark.

Your Finished Piece

When your piece returns from hallmarking, we carry out a final quality inspection, have it professionally photographed, and prepare a valuation certificate for your insurance records.

We're always here after the sale too. If you ever want your piece checked over, cleaned, or have any questions about its care, just get in touch – we're happy to help keep your jewellery looking its best for years to come.

Once your design is finalised, our typical manufacturing time is around three weeks – from casting to setting to hallmarking. The overall timeline naturally depends on how complex your design is and how many refinements we make together along the way, but most pieces are with you within 6–8 weeks of that first conversation. If you're working to a specific date, just tell us – we're used to rising to a deadline.
