The Emerald Cut Diamond
The emerald cut is one of the most distinctive diamond shapes today. A long rectangle with clipped corners and facets arranged in broad, parallel steps rather than the triangular planes of a brilliant cut. An emerald cut diamond produces a dramatic "hall of mirrors" effect, creating flashes of light, instead of loads of smaller sparkles you would see in for example a round brilliant or an oval. It is a cut that rewards clarity, confidence, and a quiet kind of elegance.
However, don't mistake an emerald for an emerald cut diamond! Although we do get the confusion here. The emerald cut diamond origins lie not with diamonds at all, but with emeralds. As far back as the 16th century, gem cutters developed a stepped, rectangular technique to protect the naturally brittle green beryl while preserving its depth of colour. Diamond cutters gradually adopted the form over the following centuries.
By the 1920s and 1930s, the emerald cut had found its perfect moment. The Art Deco movement, with its worship of geometry, clean lines, and machine-age precision, it embraced the cut entirely. Platinum settings, bold contrasts, and architectural precision became the signature of the era, and the emerald cut sat at the very heart of it. The great Parisian houses, Cartier and Boucheron among them, used it to define a new vision of luxury.
Hollywood carried that vision to the world. Screen icons of the era wore emerald cut diamonds as a mark of a particular kind of sophistication. It was modern, unsentimentally chic, and entirely at ease with being seen. The cut matched the mood of the New Woman of the 1920s: assured, geometric, holding its ground without needing to dazzle. You don't need to look further then to Grace Kelly's iconic engagement ring. Similar to Our Iris engagement ring, it was an emerald cut centre stone with two tempered baguettes either side. An absolute Icon!
After decades in which the round brilliant dominated, the emerald cut has undergone a remarkable revival. A new generation drawn to vintage aesthetics has rediscovered what the Art Deco era knew instinctively - that this cut occupies a different register entirely.
Still to this day, modern icons such as Beyonce, Amal Clooney, Paris Hilton and Mariah Carey proudly wear their elegant emerald cut engagement rings! We love to see it!
